Community Covenant is committed to the idea that our community can and should be changed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our vision is to equip and send “ministers of transformation” into our community and our world. Ultimately, that work of transformation belongs to God; but we, as disciples of Christ, get to be a part of that process in two significant ways.
First, we are called to be witnesses to the Gospel. Just as the Father sent his Son to declare a message of salvation to the world, so also the Son sends his disciples to proclaim the good news (John 20:21). Part of our role as disciples of Jesus, then, is to tell others about the work that he accomplished on our behalf. Indeed we are to be “ambassadors for Christ” who call those around us to “be reconciled to God” (2 Cor 5:20). We as a church, therefore, exist to proclaim the truth of the Gospel, which gives abundant life and brings wholeness to a broken world.
And second, we are to model the mercy that God has shown us: we are to be merciful just as our Father is merciful (Luke 6:36). We are to loose the bonds of injustice, clothe the naked, share our bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless into our homes (Isa 58:7). We are called to an attitude of compassion and love that leads us to give of ourselves even when it is difficult, costly, or uncomfortable.
The work in which we are engaged involves our entire community, not just those who feel “ready.” Indeed, we believe that we learn by doing, and we seek to empower all of God’s people to become instruments by which God can bring wholeness and holiness to our city. For that reason, our outreach vision begins not with our staff but with our church body. The passions and skills of those in our congregation help us decide where we will serve. Here is an overview of how we discern our level of involvement in outreach projects:
Stage 1: Personal Outreach Initiative
The process begins when someone in our congregation (maybe you!) recognizes an area of ministry in which he or she would like to serve. Our outreach staff (Kirsten & Denise) will discern with you how that ministry fits within the vision of CCC and help you find others who might have the same interest.
Stage 2: Task Force Outreach Initiative
A group of people from CCC begins to work toward a common ministry goal. You might plan promotional events to gather more interest. You can write up a description of your ministry so that the staff, prayer team and others can pray for and support your work. We will help you to evaluate your progress throughout the year and discern next steps.
Stage 3: Congregational Outreach Initiative
If it is clear that many at CCC are excited about a particular outreach vision, the ministry can develop into a church-wide outreach initiative, something that is promoted on a large scale and involves many from our body.
